NESCIT AMOR MAGNIS CEDERE DIVITIIS.translationtranslation
Nobilium gazas Amor, atque insignia calcat;
Nescit enim priscis cedere imaginibus.
Nobilitas sub Amore iacet: nam rustica Regi,
Regia rurali sæpè puella placet.
translationtranslation

Loue excelleth all.
With Cupid is no birth esteem or welth preferd,
A King a shepheards lasse to loue hee maketh seen,
And that a shepheards loue may light vpon a Queen,
Equalitie of state loue litle doth regard.

Amor sopra tutto.
Grandezza, e Nobiltà stima Amor poco;

Translations

Propertius, Elegiae 1, 14, 8
Liefde zwicht niet voor grote rijkdom.
Propertius, Elegiae 1, 14, 8
Love will not yield to all the might of wealth.
Love treads on the riches and the honors of the nobility, for he is not inferior to their ancient ancestors. Nobility is submitted to Love, for often a girl from the country pleases a king and a princes a countryman.
