Propertius, Elegiae 2, 15, 29-30 [v.a. Errat]

Amor staat met zijn voet op een meetlint en op overheersende teugels. Hij blijft ongevoelig voor elke stekelige maat, wet of teugel. Hij is niet wijs die je vraagt of waanzin van liefde ooit eindigt; voor ware minnaars geen grens; liefde weet niet van maat. [tr. laatste twee regels: W.A.M. Peters, Baarn 1991, p. 61] .

Amor with his foot treads the measure and reigns that govern him, he is unaffected by each measure, law or reign with iron prickles. He errs who seeks to set a term to the frenzy of love; true love has no bound.
