VIrtus repulsæ nescia sordidæ, in-
contaminatis fulget honoribus:
Nec sumit, aut ponit secureis
Arbitrio popularis auræ-

- populus nam stultus honores
Sæpè dat indignis, & famæ seruit ineptus:
Et stupet in titulis, & imaginibus.

Virtus nullius rei indiga, manet immota; Fortunam pedibus premens, Hono-
res ac Diuitias despiciens, sola sibi ipsi merces, atque amplissimum est præ-
mium. Suntque eius species variæ, Pietas, Iustitia, Prudentia, Fortitudo, Ma-
gnaminitas, Temperantia, &c.

Ipsa quidem Virtus pretium sibi, solaque latè
Fortunæ secura nitet, nec fascibus vllis
Erigitur, plausúue petit clarescere vulgi:
Diuitijs animosa suis, immotaque cunctis
Cladibus, ex alta mortalia despicit arce:

Del alto alcazar, donde el Sol y Luna
Alegres dan su buelta acelerada,
De sus virtudes la virtud cercada,
Que muchas nascen, aūque nascen de vna,
Por blanca y negra pisa à la fortuna,
Que está de bueno, y malo variada,
Y con ella del mundo la estimada
Pompa, tan libre de quietud alguna.
No estima el lauro, el cetro, o la corona,
Premio, que el mundo da cō poco apremio
Al menos digno, indigno de tenerle,
Tan sola assi se estima, y su persona
De si, por si, y en si se tiene el premio,
Que el premio en la virtud es merecerle.

Altro honor ò ricchezza non la tenta,

Ne speme, ne timor' l'ange, ò contenta.
Non cerca lode, ò quel romor che vola;
Calca l'instabil Dea, ch'altrui tormenta;
Contrario al vitio, immota in ogni salma,
Si dimostra virtu celeste, & alma,

La vertu, tenant la Fortune
Dessoubs ses pieds, ne brigue pas,
Par vne poursuitte importune,
Ny ne delaisse ses estats
A l'appetit du populaire:
Ains tout le monde du brandon
De son los, franc de tasche, esclaire;
Lequel luy sert pour tout guerdon.

s'Is 'thooghste goet datmen kan wenschen.

La Vertu soule aux pieds la fortune volage,
Eine s'esmeut au bruit du vulgaire euenté,
Non plus que le rocher dans les ondes planté
Qui plus est menaçé, qu' es branlé de l'orage,
