Sic vincior ultro.translation
Quondam liber eram, nec mens mea, nescia fraudis,
Languebat teneris læsa Cupidinibus:
Ex solo aspectu Dominæ nunc vincior ultro,
Et volucri similis sponte ego me impedico. translation

Willighe ghevanghenis.
Mijns Liefs, zo gaf ick my vrywillighlijck ghevanghen,

Translations

So I am willingly bound.
Once I was free, nor was my guileless mind numbed by the onslaughts of tender love.
By the sight of my Mistress alone I now let myself be bound willingly,
Like the bird I ensnare myself of my own accord.

Literature

  1. Ter Borch I used the same idea of the lover who has been caught in an unpublished songbook (1624-1641): 'Ick waer gevangen graeg. van een de ick bemin/ tis al daer ick nae Jaeg. Sij staedt in mijnen sin'. He uses the motive only literally.Snoep, Een 17de eeuws liedboek, pp. 90-91
