Erras: hâc itur ad illam [23]
XXIII.
Erras: hâc itur ad illam.
POrta patet duplex, præacutis horrida dumis
Altera, Daphnæis altera blanda comis.
Præsidet hûic Virtus, illi Victoria Carna est,
Has labor, has stat Honor peruigil ante fores,
Læta nec antè patent Victricis limina Lauri,
Transita quàm dederit, spina cruenta viam:
Non secùs ac læui mensæ super æquore ludunt,
Ludicra quêis Italum voluere cura trochum;
Nec patet aduerso qui prænitet annulus auro,
Lignea nî ferro ianua sternat iter.
Hoc volo: fas nulli superos sperare triumphos,
Qui neget heroo pectore dura pati.
Scilicet vt veniat sine Sole, & puluere Palma?
Vt veniat nullo parta labore quies?
Scilicet vt nullo potiaris Olympia cursu?
Vt veniat nullo Marte cruentus Honos?
Scilicet in Graiâ debelles Pergama mensâ,
Et referas Phrygijs parta tropœa rogis?
Scilicet absque armis veniat Lauinia coniux,
Italaque externis regna petita procis?
Sub dominâ meretrice excors vt viuat Vlysses,
Et repetat patrios, dulcia regna Lares?
Dissimulare virum muliebris cyclas Achillem
Pergat, & Hæmonijs Hector a raptet equis?
Alta triumphali scandas Capitolia curru,
Nec iaceant forti millia quina manu?
Per spinas, tribulosque, per invia saxa, per ignes,
Sithoniasque niues, Caucaseumque gelu,
Per medias acies, per vulnera mille, necesque,
Herculeâ Virtus tendit in astra viâ.
Absque labore nihil; venit empta dolore voluptas.
Quæ venit è duris palma, decora venit.
Ipse cui prono famulantur sidera nutu,
Proma cui totas gloria fundit opes,
Nudus, inops, exul (sic iussa Paterna ferebant.)
Aetherium duro tramite carpsit iter;
Temporaque infesto priùs induit vtraque sente,
Quàm tulit emeritis debita serta comis:
Quod Sceptrum æternâ stellarum luce coruscat,
In manibus quondam vilis arundo fuit.
Vulnera stillarunt atro priùs horrida tabo,
Quæ modò tam multo lucida sole micant:
Vnicus ad Palmam trames patientia; Palmam
Quisquis amas, durum ne fuge mollis iter.

Hola! passez deuant par ceste affreuse porte;
Car là ne ferez rien, ce sera chasse morte:
C'est le destroict poinctu d'espines, & douleurs,
Qui fraye le chemin aux lauriers & honneurs.
