II.
Sic malum creuit vnicum in omne malum.
QVondam dircæis (si vera est fabula) campis
Horrida Cadmæo semine nata phalanx:
Impia, crudelis, iurata exscindere Cœlum,
Et mox fraternâ cæde cruenta manus.
Tu quoque Pandoræ delusus fraude Prometheu,
Sparsisti humanum virus in exitium.
Quò repetita procul duplicis mendacia famæ?
Parcite. mentiri fabula nulla solet.
Nomine si verso fias, Adame, Prometheus;
Tu Cadmus, pomum dens sit; & historia est.
Seuisti vetitâ decerptum ex arbore fœtum,
Pullulat hoc scelerum semine dira seges.
Hinc quæ non vidit, quæ non mala pertulit orbis!
Armata in nostras Terra, Polusque neces.
Hostis homo grauis ipse sibi est, semperque negata
Quærit, & in vitium fertile pectus habet.
Huic inflat tumidas ventosa superbia venas;
Hic sitit in rutilis, Tantalus alter, aquis;

Ille litat Cereri; se deuouet ille Lyæo;
In castris Paphiæ militat alter heræ;
Alter in optatis sectatur mollia rebus
Otia; sed faustâ non reditura vice.
Huic animum rabido furor, iraque concutit œstro;
Intima huic ater viscera liuor edit.
Pæne gygantæo scanduntur sidera fastu,
Pæne Deum superâ pellere sede iuuat.
Terra caue, fremit infensi grauis ira Tonantis;
Iam tua, iam plectit crimina; terra paue.
Nónne vides, vt præcipiti ruat æthere fulmen?
Vndique disrupto sulphur vt axe pluat?
Vt ferus excussis Boreas bacchetur habenis?
Hauriat vt curuas vndaque, morsque rates?
Nempe Helice, Pharos illa animi, dux optima vitæ
Cimmeriâ ratio nocte sepulta iacet.
Dirigit extinctâ clauum ratione voluntas,
Mersaque tot scelerum pondere vita perit.
En mala quot surgunt malè mansi è semine Mali!
Sic malum creuit vnicum in omne malū.

O cruel changement! fiere metamorphose!
La semence d'vn fruict, quelle metempsychose!
Se change en carnaciers animaux; voir en maux,
Qui vont brisant le monde par mill' & mille fleaux.

O Adam, wat een quaet heeft ons dit saet ghedaen!
Niemant en isser vry / niemant en kan 't ontgaen.
Het vyer / de locht / de zee / de aerde draeght ons haet;
Dit seven-hoofdich dier / door-eet ons met sijn quaet.
Ghy hebt met grootē lust dit saeykē eens gesaeyt;
Maer wy met druck en sweet / geduerigh dat ghemaeyt.
