Van binnen word ik verteerd.

Inside I waste away.

Van onderen ben ik heet, van boven afgesloten. Van boven wordt er in het geheel geen water ingegoten. Van onderen is er genoeg vuur. O dood, o wrede dood, kon ik maar sterven, dan was ik uit de nood. Nu sterf ik terwijl ik leef, nu ben ik mijn hele leven dood. Mijn hart verdroogt in 't lijf, mijn jeugd gaat mij verlaten. Geen vreugde is er meer. Buiten is de brand, die binnenin het verstand en gevoel wegzuigt.

Zoals vuur vlees in afgesloten potten verteert,
zo ook verteert verzwegen liefde mijn binnenste.

As fire consumes offal even in sealed pots,
thus my bowels wast away from blind love.
