Vt purum, nitidum, haud fallens speculum decet esse;
Sic verus quoque sit, non simulatus Amor,
Verùm candidus, & qui animum fert fronte in aperta.
Conueniunt dolus, & fucus, Amorque malè. translationtranslation

Cleer and pure.
Euen as the perfect glasse doth rightly shew the face,
The louer must appeer right as hee is in deed,
For in the law of loue hath loyaltie decreed,
That falshood with true loue must have no byding place.

Chiaro, e puro.
Come mostra lo specchio vn viso tale
Qual’è, cosi dourebbe l’amatore
Mostrar di fuori, com’ è dentro, il core.
Conuien che al detto sia la voglia eguela.

Een spieghel ongeualst moet zijn in haer vertonen:

Plutarchus
Het hart van een echte minnaar is als een schitterende spiegel.
Plutarchus
The heart of a true lover is like a splendid mirror.
Zoals een spiegel zuiver, glanzend en onbedrieglijk behoort te zijn, zo moet de liefde echt zijn en niet geveinsd, maar oprecht en zijn gezicht moet zijn gevoelens laten zien. List en bedrog passen slecht bij de liefde.
Like a mirror should be pure, shining and not deceiving, in the same way also love must be true and not feigned, but upright and its face should show its feelings. Cunning and guile do not suit love.
