Mercurij dat Amor virgam subtilis amanti
Auream, & eloquij flumina blanda simul,
Moribus atque illum placituris format amicae.
Cui fauet almus Amor, sponte disertus erit. translationtranslation

Loue is author of eloquence.
Loue doth the louers toung to eloquence dispose,
With sweet conceats of loue his ladies eares to please,
And thereby moue her harte his restlesse care to ease,
For loues inuentions oft great science do disclose.

Il ben parlat’ insegna.
Insegna al’ Amator alta eloquenza,
E soaui concetti Amor sagace,
Da trouar nel amata e gratia, e pace,
Amore è mastro anchora di scienza.

Door Liefde wel bespraeckt.
De Liefd’ vernuftigh gheeft den minnaer het wel-spreken:
Wat woorden schoon gheciert een minnaer niet versint/
Om te verkrijghen ’tgheen’ hy boven al bemint?
Wien Liefde gunstigh is/ en sal gheen spraeck ontbreken.

Amour pere de l’eloquence.
l’Amour donne à l’amant l’enseigne d’eloquence,
l’Apprend les mots dorez, luy monstre la façon
De plaire à sa maistresse, & gaigner son giron.
l’Amour a inu enté mainte belle science.

Love makes eloquent.
De verfijnde Amor geeft de minnaar Mercurius' gouden staf en tegelijkertijd milde stromen van welsprekendheid, en vormt hem met manieren die zijn vrienden zullen bevallen. Wie de milde Amor gunstig gezind is, wordt vanzelf welsprekend. [cf. Ovidius, Ars amatoria 1, 610]
Delicate Amor gives the lover Mercury's golden staff, and adds eloquent floods of flattering words, and forms him with manners that will please his girl-friend. When propitious Amor fosters someone, eloquence will come of itself. [cf. Ovidius, Ars amatoria 1, 610]
