This is our edition of Amoris divini emblemata, the book which Otto Vaenius published in 1615 as a spiritual counterpart to his own book of secular love emblems (Amorum Emblemata, 1608). In this introduction, we have limited ourselves to the essentials.

About Otto Vaenius

Otto Vaenius (or Otto van Veen) was trained as a painter and humanistThis brief sketch of Vaenius&apost;s life is based on . He was born in Leiden in 1556. In 1572, because of the political situation, he fled to the southern Netherlands with his family. In Liege he studied for a few years under Dominicus Lampsonius, then left for a five-year stay in Italy. After his return to the southern Netherlands he stayed in Liege, Brussels and then settled in Antwerp. In each of these locations, he always tried to maintain favour with the Court. Until the return of his pupil Rubens from Italy, Vaenius was the leading painter in Antwerp. In his later years he turned to producing emblem books, notably Q. Horatii Flacci emblemata (1607), Amorum emblemata and Amoris divini emblemata. In 1612 he was appointed Master of the Archducal Mint. He moved to Brussels in 1615, where he died in 1629.

About the Amoris divini emblemata

The Amoris divini emblemata 837. In his preface to the book, Vaenius makes clear he himself wrote the Dutch poems (7), the French ones are by Carolus Hattronius, and the Spanish ones are by Alphonso de Ledesma. The Spanish poems have been published recently in and in . was published in 1615. In the preface to the book, Vaenius relates how the archduchess Isabella suggested his earlier love emblems (Amorum emblemata, 1608) might be reworked &lsquot;in a spiritual and divine sense.&apost; After all, &lsquot;the effects of divine and human love are, as to the loved object, nearly equal.&apost;

Both books indeed look very similar. Formally, the emblems are very much alike in structure: on the left-hand page first a Latin motto, then a group of quotations in Latin, and finally verses in several vernacular languages, on the right-hand page the picture. The visual unity of Amorum emblemata, established among other things by the presence of the Cupid figure on all emblems but one (), is echoed in Amoris divini emblemata in the ubiquitous presence of Amor Divinus and the soul (conveniently identified as such in the second emblem, ).

This is, basically, the way Praz viewed Amoris divini emblemata in his ground-breaking Studies in Seventeenth-Century Imagery. Though he notes a definite change in atmosphere in the religious book, his discussion focusses on the &lsquot;concetto&apost;-like emblems such as , and . Besides those emblems, for him the main interest of the book lies in the conceptist poet Alonso de Ledesma. 134-138

In Forster&apost;s study on Petrarchism in Renaissance literature, The Icy Fire, he wrote in the same vein about Amoris divini emblemata and explained that &lsquot;here too the conceits [of Petrarchism] were speedily converted to religious use.&apost;. 53 This is certainly evident in some cases if you compare the tortoises in (Amoris divini emblemata) and (Amorum emblemata), or the sunflowers in (Amoris divini emblemata) and (Amorum emblemata). However, Amoris divini emblemata also contains many emblems which are in no way &lsquot;converted&apost; from Amorum emblemata (, ), and emblems where there is no conceit at all (, ).

Even a superficial inspection shows that Amoris divini emblemata is not just a religious version of the previous book. In his study on Amoris divini emblemata, Santiago Sebastián counted 16 (out of 60) emblems which visually took their departure from the emblems in Amorum emblemata (which contains 124 emblems) 6. He mentions these: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , . Buschhoff (69) counts 21 emblems which visually refer back to Amorum emblemata..

Taking a quite different approach, in his study Sebastián has argued the book&apost;s contents reflect the traditional aspects of the christian mystic&apost;s road to unity with God. He categorised the book&apost;s emblems into four groups: those that give general characteristics of divine love, those that describe the active life, those describing the comtemplative life and finally those that deal with the unitive life.

Expanding on this view, Anne Buschhoff argued the stages of the mystic life do also, in part, determine the sequence of emblems in the book . According to her article, the first eight emblems form a series depicting the gradual rising of the soul towards unification, and so do the ten concluding emblems.

In her dissertation Anne Busschhoff has again argued this point, but she also considers the wider question of the relation between Vaenius&apost;s two books of love emblems, and studies the relations between motto, picture and subscription.

Recently Jan Bloemendal has shown how the study of intermediate sources for Vaenius's quotations can throw some light on Vaenius&apost;s procedure for creating Amoris divini emblemata..

Influence

A second impression of Amoris divini emblemata did not appeared until 1660.838 However, Vaenius&apost;s book was to influence Hugo&apost;s Pia desideria (1624). Some of the individual parallels we (or others) have encountered between these two books can be found through the bibliographical entry for Pia desideria. Besides these concrete parallels, the books share the basic idea of visually representing the growth and pitfalls of the love between man and God; both books use a small girl to represent the soul and a small boy to represent divine love.

This was to prove a very fertile idea, helping to shape books like Typus mundi, Divini et humani amoris antipathia and later, Jan Luyken&apost;s Jesus en de Ziel. This makes Amoris divini emblemata the starting point of an important tradition in religious emblem books. To further testify to the perceived similarities between Hugo and Vaenius, in the 18th century some books appeared with reworking emblems from both writers (in Dutch by Jan Suderman, and in French by mme de Guyon).149

Copy Used For This Edition

To make this edition of Amoris divini emblemata the copy of the first impression (Antwerp, 1615) was used. It is conserved in the library of the Faculty of Arts of Utrecht University, shelf number LB-KUN: RAR LMY VEEN, O 6. We have gratefully made use of the scanned images and preparatory work done by Jan de Boer for his (web-based) facsimile edition of the work.

Limitations of time and resources did not allow us to make a comparison between the Utrecht copy and other extant copies of the book. We hope to do so in the future. It is clear the Utrecht copy shows some damage.

Two irregularities in the copy we used deserve mentioning:

pages 26 - 30 have been bound incorrectly, the sequence in the book is 29, 30, 27, 28. We have restored the correct sequence. the picturae on pages 65 and 71 seem to have been switched. It is unclear what has happened, the page numbers and catchwords show no irregularities. We have restored the picturae to their correct place. We might have switched the texts, rather than the picturae, to correct the error; further research is necessary to show whether we made the right decision.

Transcription

We have transcribed the full text from the Utrecht copy and encoded this text using TEI mark-up, to allow for flexibility in presentation and non-destructive editorial enhancement of the text. Editorial Additions

We have added normalisations of spacing and interpunction (always allowing the viewer the option to view either the normalised or the original text). Also the orthography of the Dutch texts have been normalised with respect to the use of u, v, w, i and j.

Some special symbols are shown as different characters because the fonts installed on a standard computer may not be able to correctly represent the original symbols. This holds true for the e-cedilla, for instance in the quotation from Proverbs in , which is represented as &lsquot;æ&apost;. The symbol &lsquot;q&apost; with a &lsquot;3&apost; through the stem (with or without an acute accent) is represented as &lsquot;que&apost; (this can be a substitute for &lsquot;and&apost;). The &lsquot;q&apost; with an acute accent is simply abbreviated as &lsquot;q&apost;. Two cases where e-tilde is used as an abbreviation are shown as &lsquot;&emacron;&apost;.

To some emblems we have added translations of the texts. These translations are made by Jan Bloemendal, with thanks to Boukje Thijs and Pim van Tent. In addition, several references to parallels (in Amorum emblemata or elsewhere) have been added. In each emblem, some literature is also pointed out. Again, this is something that still needs to be worked on.

De Emblemen over de wereldse liefde die ik al heel wat jaren geleden in mijn jeugd heb geschreven, heb ik gepubliceerd om een vriend een plezier te doen; ik heb begrepen dat ze bij alle ontwikkelden zeer in de smaak zijn gevallen. Toen Hare Doorluchtigheid, zoals vrienden me hebben verteld, ze had bekeken en had gevraagd of de Emblemen gemakkelijk naar een geestelijke en goddelijke betekenis overgebracht konden worden omdat goddelijke en menselijke liefde ongeveer dezelfde uitwerking hebben naar het object van de liefde, wilde ik de onuitgesproken wens van de Vorstin niet teleurstellen en mijn eigen plicht niet verzaken. Daarom besloot ik, om haar een genoegen te doen, enkele Emblemen over de goddelijke liefde te schrijven en te tekenen, met daaraan toegevoegd citaten uit de Heilige Schrift en de geschriften van de heilige kerkvaders. To the reader and spectator

I devised emblems of natural love when I was still growing up but only now, quite a few years since, I have had them printed for the sake of a friend of mine. I gathered that they had been received most favourably in the very best circles. When Her Highness, as I understood from reports by friends, had had a look and had asked if those emblems could easily be redirected toward a spiritual and divine meaning, as the effects of human and divine love are almost the same towards the object of love, I did not wish to disregard the Princess's silent wish, nor to fall short of my responsibility. To please her I decided to produce 'Emblems of Divine Love', with the addition of a broad selection of quotations from Holy Scripture and the writings of the Church Fathers. In addition there are poems in foreign languages (Spanish, Dutch, French) to illustrate the emblems. Alphonsus de Ledesma, a most excellent poet, made the Castilian collection, M. Carolus Hattronius, licensed in sacred and secular law and advisor to the Duke of Aarschot, collected the French. The vernacular poetry sprang up in spring, as it were, at our home.

Therefore, reader, may you generously receive and take a look at these emblems that are humbly dedicated to Her Highness, who took the initiative for, and stimulated this undertaking. Fare well, and expect others from our hand in due time.

De moeder van alle dingen, de Natuur, of de Kunst zelf kunnen elke gewenste realiteit uit een volmaakt lichaam (waarin warmte en kou, vocht en droogte in evenwicht zijn) halen. Immers wanneer de natuur de warmte geheel heeft afgescheiden, verwijdert ze de kou die overblijft, geheel en haalt ze uit één lichaam twee vormen, vormen die onderscheiden zijn naar aard en materie. Hieruit zie je, omdat de één bij voorbaat machtiger is, meteen strijd ontstaan: één wordt onderdrukt wanneer de ander hem belaagt; omdat beide gemakkelijk naar binnen kunnen, kunnen ze elkaar kapot maken en elkaar bevechten, want ze hebben beide precies dezelfde oorsprong.

Zo waren Liefde en haat, die nu gescheiden zijn, in de begintijd (al hadden ze nog geen naam en geen vaste maat) in één natuur verbonden. De goddelijke wil neigt geheel naar deze geest, waaruit ze de haat heeft verjaagd en de Liefde volkomen voor zichzelf heeft afgescheiden en deze geheel en al heeft omhelsd; hieraan heeft ze haar eigen vorm aangepast en daarna wilde ze uit de schoot van de maagd ontspruiten om de wereld te hulp te komen en het droevig verloren gegane heil van de mensheid te herstellen.

Maar zodra de haat was buitengesloten en de Liefde de overwinning behaald had en de heerschappij voerde, hing in alle uithoeken de haat als een schaduw dreigend boven haar. Toch mogen we de natuur van de haat niet verachten, maar moeten die tegenover de zonden stellen en gebruiken om het kwaad te haten. Beide hebben zelfs altijd iets goeds in zich. Maar de Liefde zorgt voor alles als een vuur van heilzame aard en voedt alles, terwijl uit de haat niets dan verderf komt.

De levendmakende Liefde is Christus, de opperste bewerker van het heil en het licht dat afstraalt van het eeuwige licht, zonder Wie al het sterfelijke noodlottig ten ondergaat, zonder Wie van alle atomen de verbindingen losraken, waardoor die atomen neerstorten. Hij is de machtige vlam, door Wiens deugd de mensenzielen op aarde worden geregeerd en door Wiens kracht hun geest zich inspant tot de hemel in te gaan.

Daarom, Christus, God, die wij vlam en vuur noemen, werp in de diepten van ons hart de goddelijke gloed, dat onze geest, voor eeuwig op u gericht, rust vindt.

Song of love

Nature, mother of all things, or art itself can derive an abstract entity, whichever they want, from a body that is perfect on all sides (of which the hot does not overwhelm the cold, nor the wet the dry). For where nature emits heat deep inside it removes the remaining cold far away and brings forth from one body two shapes, shapes distinct in nature and matter. Consequently, you may see that once one has reached a point that it is more powerful, immediately fights arise and one is under pressure because the other is besieging it. For the way in is easy on either side and there arise mutual destruction and mutual fighting, while in origin both are completely alike. Thus love and hate, which are now distinct, at the beginning of time were joined under one nature (although they did not have a name nor a definite measure). Towards this frame of mind Divine Will was inclined. As a result, after chasing away hate, the Will itself for itself separated off total love and surrounded itself of its own accord with love in its entirety. This the Will fitted with its own shape and thereafter wanted to come forth from the Virgin's womb to help the world and to repair the sad damage done to the salvation of man. But when, once hate has been shut out, in triumph love raises the horns and is master of the realm, as a shadow hate throughout all the corners of the earth looms threateningly over it. None the less it is not at all right to hold his nature in contempt, but it is fitting to set the very same opposite the vices and hate evil. They are good albeit not always both. But love, as it were a flame that kindles a better character, sustains all and dispenses nourishment to all, whereas only perdition comes forth with hate itself. Christ is life-giving love and he is the highest guarantor of salvation and a light shining from eternal light, without whom all mortals perish in death-bringing fall, without whom all collapses because the bonds have been resolved. He Himself is a mighty flame by Whose virtue human souls on earth are guided and under whose influence spirits long to ascend to their ethereal abode. Therefore, o Christ and God, whom we call flame and fire, let divine warmth enter our hearts to the core, so that our mind, its attention fixed on You, may have eternal peace.

Eensgezindheid.

Bij vrienden zoek je niet naar het stoffelijke, maar naar de intentie, omdat het één door vrienden vaak wordt gegeven, het tweede door de liefde wordt geschonken: hetzelfde willen en hetzelfde niet willen, dat is hechte vriendschap.

Als de vriendschap tussen mensen zoekt naar eensgezindheid en overeenstemming van intenties, en verschil in karakter nooit tot hechte eendracht kan leiden, hoe zal iemand dan de vriendschap met God verkrijgen als hem behaagt wat God mishaagt en hij zich met hen wil vermaken van wie hij weet dat God aanstoot aan hen neemt?

Wanneer de Liefde de mens onder één juk brengt met een ander mens en God, wat zouden die twee dan niet kunnen trekken?

Uit één liefde veel goeds

Zoals uit één boomwortel vele takken komen, zo ontstaan uit één liefde vele deugden. De tak van een goede daad heeft geen groen als hij niet in de wortel van de liefde blijft.

Hoe gelukkig is de liefde waaruit een volhardend karakter, zuivere aandoeningen, verfijnd intellect, zuivere verlangens, roemvolle werken, vele deugden, waardige verdiensten en verheven beloningen ontstaan.

De wortel van alle goed is de liefde en de wortel van alle kwaad de begeerte.

De liefde schittert tussen alle deugden.

Al ware het, dat ik met de tongen der mensen en der engelen sprak, maar had de liefde niet, ik ware schallend koper of een rinkelende cimbaal.

Het is alleen de liefde die alles overwint en waarzonder alles niets waard is.

De liefde overwint alles.

Ware liefde vindt niets hard, niets bitter, niets zwaar, niets dodelijk. Welk zwaard, welke wonden, welke straf, welke dood kan volmaakte liefde scheiden? De liefde is een ondoordringbaar pantser: ze laat een lans afschampen, schudt een zwaard af, tart gevaren, spot met de dood. Als het ware liefde is, overwint ze alles.

De liefde voelt geen last, telt geen moeite; zij tracht naar meer dan zij kan; zij praat niet over onmogelijk, want zij meent dat zij alles kan en mag.

Ware liefde houdt geen maat.

Het groeit door het waaien van de wind.

Door haar liefde werkt de genade van God aanvankelijk zonder ons uit wat ze voltooit in samenwerking met ons wanneer we willen. Maar zonder haar, als ze niets bewerkt, zullen wij zelfs wanneer we willen, volstrekt niet in staat zijn tot goede werken.

Zien is niet voldoende.

Voor wie verliefd is, is het niet genoeg eenmaal te hebben gezien, omdat de kracht van de liefde de intensiteit van het zoeken verveelvoudigt.

Een minnaar vindt altijd wel een weg.

Vraagt naar de Here en zijn sterkte, zoekt zijn aangezicht bestendig.

Het geluk van de liefde.

Gelukkig is het geweten en welzalig de ongereptheid van degene in wiens hart geen andere liefde huist naast de liefde van Christus die de wijsheid, de kuisheid, het geduld, de rechtvaardigheid en de overige deugden is, èn van degene die nooit naar de herinnering van een mens smacht of verlangt hem te zien.

Gebruik de lezing uit de Schrift als een spiegel, verbeter het kwade, bewaar het goede en doe het betere. De Schrift is immers een spiegel die het kwade toont en leert dat het verbeterd moet worden.

De Liefde is niet laks in zaken van de deugd, aangezien zij de waakzaamheid zelf is.

Dit is de manier van doen van vrouwen, om hun kapsel beter te krijgen; dit zou ook de manier van doen van onze ziel moeten zijn om een heiliger vuur in zich te krijgen. De vrouwen bekijken zich in de spiegel om de mannen te behagen, en wij moeten om aan Gods verwachtingen te voldoen ons in de liefde spiegelen.

Zonder liefde de dood.

Wie niet liefheeft, blijft in de dood. Een ieder, die zijn broeder haat, is een mensenmoorder en gij weet, dat geen mensenmoorder eeuwig leven blijvend in zich heeft.

De angst voor de dood is over me gekomen. De profeet noemt de haat tegen de broeder 'dood'; immers onze liefde is het leven. Als de liefde het leven is, is de haat de dood. Toen de mens begon te vrezen dat hij haatte wie hij liefhad, vreesde hij de dood, maar een fellere dood en een meer innerlijke, waardoor de ziel wordt gedood, niet het lichaam.

Zij is de bron en de oorsprong van deugden.

Als u niet in de woestijn van dorst wilt omkomen, drink dan de liefde. Zij is immers de bron die God wil aanboren om te voorkomen dat wij sterven.

Blijf dus bij en in Hem, en als u Hem altijd proeft, zal u ook altijd geluk ten deel vallen.

De liefde is het heil voor de goede daden, de dood voor de wandaden, het leven van de deugden, de moed van de strijdenden, de ziel van gelovigen, de oorzaak van daden van verdienste.

Ze is de vervulling van de wet.

En het doel van de vermaning is liefde uit een rein hart, uit een goed geweten en een ongeveinsd geloof.

Hij die in wat hij doet de liefde bewaart, houdt vast aan wat in de Schriften verborgen en openbaar is.

Het doel van de vermaning is Liefde. Daardoor wordt de wet vervuld, niet opgeheven. Voedsel wordt gemaakt om te worden gegeten, een geweven mantel wordt gemaakt om voltooid te zijn. Dus Hij sprak niet over het doel van de vermaning opdat zij als het ware opgeheven zou worden, maar voltooid, en vervuld, niet verhuld.

Als God de Liefde zelf is, dan gehoorzaamt wie deze Koning het meest liefheeft, het best zijn wet.

Mijn ziel, ten slotte is de Liefde het doel en oogmerk van de wet, want wie zuiver liefheeft, heeft God en zijn wetten in zich. Dan blijft dus over Hem lief te hebben en te volgen met heel uw liefde, waarmee dit boek begon en eindigt.
